“ttyl” The Book That Has Everyone Talking

Do you know what t.t.yl. means?  If you do, great, you may be one step ahead of your instant and text messaging teen.  If not, that’s o.k. too, because now you know that “ttyl” stands for talk to you later.  You now also know that ”ttyl” is the subject of a new book, aimed at those in the middle grades and up, but the content is anything but preteen/teen rated according to some parents and educators.

Now, I’ve skimmed though the book and I must say that it is racy, at least compared to what I read in middle school/junior high with use of profanity, underage drinking and sexual references.  However, I also have to admit that the book is honest and real.  It addresses a fantasy that many school girls (and boys for that matter) have had throughout the ages-hooking up with a hot teacher!

Note to Parents/Guardians, brush up on your instant messaging lingo.  The book is written almost entirely in the form of instant messages.

Steamy and a bit much?

Yes.

Real?

Yes.

My suggestion would be, as noted elsewhere, for parents to pre-read or at least skim through what your child reads. Preferably before they read it. Much like what you would do if picking out a picture book or easy reader for a younger kid.  While I’m all for getting kids to read anyway that we can, I also think that our kids are growing up way too soon.  It is essential for kids to be kids as long as possible.

What do you think?

  5. Teacher Says:

This book is a disgrace. Ten year olds have been reading these. To make a teacher have to take away books from children is sad. The author should be ashamed.

  6. Nemesis Says:

Is this book really written in textspeak? This book is a disgrace and shouldnt be considered a book. Its simply disgusting. Anyone who claims to love this… is simply an idiot. I wont claim my grammar is perfect, hell I know it needs work. But atleast I try. I find it almost amusing how everyone who seems to love this book, are terrible speller with even worse grammar. I mean honestly, ‘relli’ how hard is it to type really. hell its only one more letter.

I love how the ‘author’ put in some mature content, but the whole book is written for young readers.

  7. . Says:

first off, ten year olds aren’t exactly teens and shouldn’t be reading this
but if you’re old enough to read it, it is a pretty good book for teen girls to read.
and yeah, this book is MEANT for young readers and there’s nothing wrong with that!
and the “bad” grammar it has, is done on purpose, hell its written in IM format! And I’ll have you know, Nemesis that not everyone who happens to love this book has poor grammar or sucks at spelling; that comment is entirely biased.
this book isn’t meant for educational purposes or anything, far from it! it’s some light reading, just for fun so there’s no need to critique it in such a harsh manner.

  8. Nillerz Says:

I can’t believe a publishing agency actually released this bollocks. It is composed of awful language and awful grammar. This will just continue to the degredation and retardation of English speaking youth (if you can call it that).

  9. Student Says:

This book is not a disgrace! It’s not the author’s fault that children below the age of twelve have been reading it. Children are mature these days. They know the obvious from right and wrong. We shouldn’t underestimate them with this. Do you Teacher, Nillerz, and Nemesis really not trust preteens THAT much? Hell, they’ve probably watched tons of movies already on a whole bunch of different matters, they should know how to handle a situation like that of the one discussed in the book.

And F.Y.I.,It’s also a choice if someone wishes to spell the word really however they want to. You still understood, right? And it’s called text talk for a reason, duh!

The big turnoff for me is that the book is written in IM talk–which I despise. Sure, short hand is fine for taking notes, but to talk? Seriously? This is why so many people (ahem, Americans mostly) have horrendous English skills. From what I’ve seen of the book so far it doesn’t seem like a particularly interesting nor intelligent novel. However, it isn’t right for parents and teachers of middle school students to blame the author. It isn’t the author’s fault that the children are reading this type of material. If anything, I would think that it’s the people who influence their lives most (.. teachers and parents) who should be blamed for not teaching the children what they think is right (not that I agree with what the teachers/parents think). I don’t think that children should be “talking” the way that the characters in the book do, but, sadly, the way the trend is going a majority of kids are probably going to end up talking that way anyways. Sometimes America just makes me sad.

I’m 13 years old and I just bought the book today.
It’s really good. I strongly disagree with some of the comments on this page; the book is aimed at teenagers – most of whom find they can relate to the characters and storylines in the book. Therefore, the topics discussed can’t do much harm, eh? (And for the record.. the characters that the book is based on are around 15 years old – i.e. in year 10).

I think the reason why I love the book is because it relates so much to me and my life, and the friendships myself and people I know have.

As someone previously said, it is meant for a light, easy read. Mind you, it’s probably also good this way because some people that are not great readers would enjoy it.

I understand where some people are coming from; I myself find chatspeak etc gets very annoying and can be a sign of (i don’t know how else to put it) low intelligence. But the author (Lauren Myracle) has, I believe, done a very good job on the book – and I think it was a great idea.

That’s just my opinion – but one from a teenager.

This is indeed a very good book,I bought it for my daughter, and I would recommend it to all girls ages 13 and up. As for the younger readers, like the girl who does’nt know what ejaculate means,)yet, anyways),don’t read it just because you think it’s “cool”. I had a 5th grade girl who insisted she was “mature” enough, but she too had no clue as to what ejaculate,or any of the other “racy” parts meant. The only thing she got were the cusswords. She bought it just because her older cousin was reading it. I find it completely pathetic that many young girls think they’re “grown-up” just because they read a book meant for older teens. Big whoop,if all you are reading it for is to act “mature”,or to show all the adults how “bad” you are…. For those younger girls who read it for no other reason than it was a great book, way to go,at least there are some smart girls out there!! Also,as I am aware that some of the more childish ones will take what I say as an insult, don’t bother calling me a b****,or anything else,I don’t care! To you,BOO,HOO and hope you “mature” in the future!

    • Emily Says:

um i dont care what “rachel”
says i was just wondering and hey i know what sex and all that means i’m a sixth grader and have a 11th grade reading level so shut ur crappy mouth

  20. maddie Says:

I am 13 and quite mature for my age. I read this book and thought it was AMAZING. It deals with real teen issues, and is quite an easy read. Some people would find it annoying that it was all in msn language, but thats one of the reasons why I loved the book, being an msn addict myself! I recommend it to girls 13 and up.
